Combat Insomnia Without Medication

Insomnia 1Many people suffer from a sleep disorder known as insomnia. Insomnia is caused by many different factors including stress and an irregular sleep cycle. Most people opt for the chemical method of dealing with it because it doesn’t take any effort or thought. Take a pill, go to sleep. What they don’t consider is the side effects that come from these types of pills, not the least of which is addiction.

Natural remedies exist for dealing with insomnia, including research to find out the root of the insomnia. Relaxation is important to sleep quality. You need to learn to really relax your body in order to allow it to fall asleep naturally. Progressive muscle relaxation helps the body to systematically release tension, this means start at one point of your body and make it relax. Extremities like toes are a good place to start, or start from your center and radiate the relaxation outward picturing the stress releasing from your body through your fingers and toes, which ever works for you best. You may want to exercise before you begin the relaxation technique as exercise will strengthen, tire out, and help to relax the muscles, giving you a head start.

Follow the same routine every night so your body gets into a habit and is conditioned for a sleep response.

Basic Health Tips To Practice Everyday!

Jumping GirlIn today’s world, we seem to be moving at a lot faster pace but not getting any exercise. Our movement seems to be by computer, telephone, car, train, plane and a multitude of other fast paced modes of transportation along physical and informational highways.

We never seem to have the time to actually exercise by riding a bike or swimming, hiking or just playing a nice game of football at the park down the street. We have a telephone, computer, gps and Ipod in one hand and a shake, hamburger and fries in the other. This is surely a recipe for unhealthy living.

We need to learn to empty both hands and let them relax a little. Sit down or lay down and let the world slow down around you. This doesn’t mean drop into your bed in exhaustion, it means take some time to yourself, sit by the pool, read a book or other form of literature (reading the Wall Street Journal doesn’t count). Listen to some relaxing music, practice some deep breathing techniques and really learn how to help your body totally relax.
Eat a more balanced meal ( this doesn’t mean balancing a shake and a hamburger in both hands while trying to control the steering wheel) and eat at regular intervals. Actually sit down and have a nice healthy bowl of soup, or a nice balanced meal with meat, veggies and other good for you items. Take time to yourself, get reacquainted with your family and friends.

Manage Your Stress Like A Pro

ScreamingWe all have stress in our lives and how we deal with it will have an affect on our outlook on life and on our long term health prospects. In order to help your body cope with stress, it’s important to eat healthy meals and drink sensibly. Many people turn to alcohol and food abuse in order to try to reduce stress. This can have an opposite effect, increasing the amount of stress the person is under. A better practice is to take up relaxation techniques and perform solo exercising. Swimming would be a good exercise to relieve stress.

Follow your values, be true to yourself. You don’t need to live by others values and expectations and it’s okay to tell someone ‘no’ in a respectful manner. Set yourself realistic goals and expectations and forgive yourself if you fall a little short; just use that as a starting point to continue reaching for your goal. If you’re feeling bad about yourself, give yourself a pep talk. Remind yourself about your successes. Take control of what you can and accept what you can’t.

If you have unhealthful habits, work to remove them from your day to day life. Things such as smoking can not only negatively affect your long term health, they can also build on your stress.

Remember, you can only do the best you can do, if there are too many demands on you and you can’t possibly fulfill them all, do the best you can do and accept you can’t do the rest. This means asking for help when appropriate and saying ‘no’ when you have to.

Stop Hair Loss Today Before It Is Too Late

HeadIf you’re losing your hair, there may be many reasons other than the ‘natural’ ones. Stress in a multitude of forms can cause hair loss. Stress hits everyone at some time or another through finances, pregnancies, child birth, the death of someone close, disease, job problems, divorce, argumentative situations, etc. The good thing is that stress related hair loss often reverses itself when the stress has been gone for a time. Surgery is a type of stress also and in being such it can be responsible for hair loss, it too will restore after a period of time. A way to speed up the restoration process is upping your amount of exercise, this will help relieve symptoms of stress and help you recover quicker. Massage will often help in that area in addition to relaxing muscles and increasing blood flow to all organs including your hair follicles.

Drugs can also have an effect on your possibility of hair loss, many acne drugs are very good at promoting hair loss while performing their other activities. Viagra may make you happy in other areas but your hair on top of your head may not be as appreciative. Drugs that actively affect such things as moods and emotions are apt to cause hair loss as are acid reducers, cholesterol reducers, heart pills, anti-inflammatory drugs and a whole host of others.

Many of these drugs and situations you cannot help or stop so the best way to reduce their effect is to get plenty of exercise, but also relax, or get a massage. Look for hair treatments that contain Saw Palmetto (which isn’t hard to find) or stinging nettle. Stinging nettle is packed full of vitamins and it shares the ability to block production of DHT with Saw Palmetto.

Stress Relief Tips

stressAlmost every ailment known to mankind is affected in one way or another due to the presence of stress, usually detrimental. While knowing that a high stress level is not good for your general state of health and can make other conditions worsen, knowing ways to effectively reduce stress can often be elusive. we live in a fast moving culture, but if you take few minutes and reflect on the following tips, finding breathing room and lower blood pressure can be simplified greatly.

Proper breathing control. Of course you have heard the saying “take a deep breath.” Getting Oxygen into the lungs in adequate amounts physically reduces stress on the body as well as feeds the mental capability needed to deal with processing efficiency. Thoughts can become clearer and oxygen to the muscles can bring relaxation to the body, allowing you to relax. Learning to control your breathing can also come in handy if you happen to react to stress in a vascular manner. Taking a few deep breaths can make all the difference between an inconvenience and a panic attack.

Emotional issues and conflict continuance is a common stress factor. Unresolved emotional tensions whether in the home or career centered are often causes of high stress, and if not dealt with can lead to more serious mental and physical health issues ranging from increased risk of heart disease to suicide. Keeping healthy social relationships and allowing yourself creative expression are also great stress reducers. Happy people are not heavily affected by stress and happy people are those with healthy mental outlooks and habits.

Create change. Sometimes a simple change of scenery, pattern of behavior, or just a night on the town is needed to get you out of a stressful rut. The day to day drag of never-ending responsibility without a change can lead to minor depression and leave you with a feeling of frustration that is likely to physiologically stressful. Variety is the spice of life, and if we enjoy life, even if stress is still present, it is less likely to grip us than if we are in stupor of dissatisfaction.

While these tips might not seem like the cutting edge of health science, they are proven, effective, and simple to follow. Who needs something else complicated to stress over? Take a walk in the park, or curl up with a good book instead of watching television for a change. It is sometimes the little things that make the biggest difference.

Don’t Have Time to Exercise? Think Again

exercise timeMany people believe they have no time for exercise, or they believe they get enough exercise moving about the office and back and forth to the car. This is not normally a correct thought. Most people are woefully under exercised and as a result, they have lethargic muscles and possibly a dull outlook on life in general. They have time to have coffee breaks, time to watch tv, time to read the paper, time to gossip, etc. but they don’t consider this as time they could be putting into the health of their body.

Exercise is very important to your physical health, mental health and your life. There are plenty of things you can do in little spits and spurts to get more exercise. When you go out to get your paper, take a walk up and down the street or around the block before retrieving it. When you are watching TV, take a ride on your stationary bike for fifteen or twenty minutes. Or take a walk on a treadmill. While you’re making your breakfast, step back from the kitchen sink, drop forwards against it and do a string of push ups.

Before you go to sleep, lay down on the floor and do a hand full of sit ups. If you want to gossip with your friends at work, take a break with them and walk around the block while you gossip. If you bring lunch with you, lunch doesn’t normally take an hour to make and eat, you can take that extra time to take a few trips up and down the stairs or take a walk around the block or maybe you can walk to and from the place where you plan to have lunch.

There are so many different things you can do in short bursts of exercise. People with sedentary jobs are at the most risk of health problems due to lack of exercise, they are also at risk of health problems due to stress and frustration. They can tend to be very lethargic and might have a hard time even getting their job done after a while. Getting up and moving around, getting fresh air, getting some sunshine, all of these things will help to get the blood going, get the muscles loosened up, get the spirit lifted and make the person feel much more alive. Use your imagination, there is always a way to get some more exercise into your life. Bursts of exercise are no replacement for real exercise but it is far better than no exercise at all.

Make Healthy Choices Everyday

healthy choicesHealth isn’t just about your diet, it isn’t even just about diet and exercise, it’s about anything and everything you do in your day to day life, it’s about how you interact with people, how you deal with problems, how you handle stress, etc. All of these things impact your health.

The medical community has come up with all sorts of drugs to help with all sorts of day to day issues. There are drugs for depression, drugs for sleepiness, drugs for lack of sleepiness, drugs for the overly stressed, etc. In other words, in the estimation of the medical community, there is a chemical based drug for every possible scenario a person could face. But is this the healthy solution?

When your scared, your body defense system fills you with adrenaline making you more quickly able to respond with the flight or fight instinct you are born with. So when your alarm goes off in the morning, startling you awake, the first thing that happens is your body is filled with adrenaline and you begin your day with an already stressed biological system. Try setting your alarm earlier and have it go on with music. There are alarms that get progressively louder as they play, this would be infinitely more desirable, as they wake you slowly and without stress. When you get up, open your window or at least your curtains or shades. Sunlight is good for the body and soul when you first wake up, it pushes you even more towards a fully awake state.

Once you’re awake, try taking a walk, maybe around your back yard, or if you are dressed take a walk around the block, get your blood moving and warm your body up before you start your day. This also reduces the shock your body suffers when going from the sleep state to fully awake and out the door.

Once you’re up and moving and your blood is flowing, have a good sensible breakfast, try to get some of your fruit requirements in on your morning meal, have some eggs, etc. Don’t overstuff yourself, eat slow so your body knows how full it is. Stop eating when you’re not hungry, don’t eat until your stomach is totally full. This will make you lethargic and ready to go back to bed.

Once your at work, you can relieve the stress on both your body and your mind by getting up and moving around a bit, look out a window, go outside for a break, at least change positions in your chair. Your body isn’t meant to stay in the same position for hours on end. To do so stresses it and to do it daily will eventually cause health problems. Going outside is great for releasing stress. Being in the sun and the fresh air, taking deep breaths and walking a bit will reset your body, make you feel refreshed and better able to deal with the stresses of the rest of the day.
