Slow Aging’s Effects In 5 Easy Steps

agingSlowing down the aging process is not something that you have to wait until you are elderly to implement, nor is it something that has to be necessarily treated with drug or surgery. Following these ten tips to halting aging in its tracks and slowing it to a crawl is something that you can do sooner rather than later.

  1. Get active. – Diet and exercise are the two most effective means to slowing down the aging process. Maintaining a healthy amount of regular activity will go a long way toward keeping your body in good shape and fighting off the effects of aging. By increasing muscle strength and elasticity, as well as keeping the lungs and heart engaged in regular stimulus not only combats the major physical ailments associated with aging, but can also help you keep you in tip top mental health as well as providing you with extra energy to do the things that you love.
  2. Be social. – It is a proven fact that people who have an active social life tend to not only live longer, but remain in better overall physical and emotional health for the duration of their lives. Get active in community events, keep contact with friends and family regularly, and spend less time in front of the television. Idle bodies and minds are susceptible to illness and the effects of aging at a much higher rate than the socially active.
  3. Reduce stress. – Stress is a major contributor to almost every disease and malady that comes with aging. Heart disease, high blood pressure, depression, and even suicide are directly related to the amount of stress in one’s life and the ability to reduce its effects. Activities such as meditation, yoga, and even involvement in religious activities have been shown to have a positive effect on the levels of stress in people as they age, and in turn have drastic effects on their overall health.
  4. Take immediate care of even minor injuries. – Minor injuries such as minor cuts and sprains, though almost benign in younger people, are a constant source of infection and cell destruction in the later stages of life, and if left untreated or ignored, can develop into serious problems. Other factors such as diabetes or poor diet can exacerbate these conditions and even make them life threatening. In some individuals, the bodies need to constantly fight off minor infection can result in weight gain, increased diabetic risk, heart attack, and even Alzheimer’s. Eat fast healing promoting foods such as fish, nuts, and greens, as well as making sure that even seemingly minor injuries are taken seriously and treated immediately.
  5. Adjust your diet. – Instead of eating a few large meals every day, adjust your schedule to accommodate several smaller meals of healthy foods throughout the day. Divide your normal 3 meal diet into 5-7 smaller meals, consisting of low sugar, vitamin rich foods. Omega-3 fatty acid rich foods such as fish are not only great for your heart, but also promote younger looking skin, provide your body with a health source of energy and promotes mental alertness. Foods with high levels of vitamin c and D are a great way to stave off the common cold and other immunity attacking diseases that can quickly develop into serious sickness, leaving you feeling without energy, or even worse, actually become life threatening.

Avoid Weakened Muscle’s Disasters

musclesMost people do not realize that the loss of lean muscle mass later on in life is NOT an unavoidable effect of aging, but usually comes from simple inactivity. Most people become less physically active after the age of 30, which coincides with an increase in muscle loss. Much like the loss of sight or hearing, many accept this as a normal and unstoppable consequence of getting older even though it is not. To reduce this trend, maintain a normal level of health consciousness, with exercise and a healthy diet being the central focus.

This is especially important as our bodies become older, because the eventual outcome of inactivity is often the loss basic muscular strength and even the ability to take care of ourselves. When muscles weaken due to lack of use, lifting simple objects becomes harder if not impossible without injury, the risk of falls and other weakness related injuries increases, and the very ability to maintain healthy activity becomes almost unthinkable, making the effects of inactivity exponential.

One statistic that should motivate you to keep up with muscle activity is the fact that almost one quarter of all people of retirement age or above who have a fall that results in a fractured hip will live no more than one full year after the accident.  The main reason for these falls is that the inactive person soon weakens to the point that regular balance during walking is severely effected. Even if you have never been involved in heavy physical activity before in your life, before this happens to you, considering strength training for you muscles should definately become a part of your everyday activities.

There are several benefits to even the lightest forms of muscle strength training, just a few of which are listed here.

  • An increase in lean muscle mass- This adds to not only your ability to lift and maintain body strength, but also aiding in the burning of calories essential to maintaining proper weight control.
  • Increased bone density- As we age, our bodies begin to lose the ability to efficiently process calcium for bone strength. Strength training helps to maintain bone density, warding off significantly the chances of hip fractures, broken wrists, and other forms of bone injuries that can seriously debilitate your ability to remain active in the future.
  • Decreased blood pressure – Exercise, not only provides you with a stress release, but as a result, has an active ability to keep blood pressure at a manageable level, further reducing the chances for heart disease, strokes, and hypertension related disease.
  • Lower cholesterol levels and decreased obesity risks- Cholesterol and weight gain seem to be constant enemies as we get older. Muscle strength training helps to control these two factors, sometimes much more effectively than medicine alone can.

The benefits of muscular strength training touches almost every aspect of an aging person’s health, many of which are some of the most damaging and prevalent debilitating conditions known to afflict the aged, such as heart disease and muscle fragility. Be sure to talk to your doctor before you start any exercise regimen. With regular physical activity, including strength training, a healthy diet, and a positive outlook, you should be able to slow down the effects of muscular and bone frailty, and thus avoid being a statistic.

4 Tips To Reducing Liver Spots

liverspotsLiver spots are a build up of the chemical melanin in the skin, resulting in a brownish or black blemish on the skin and usually afflicting people over the age of 40 with a history of prolonged exposure to the sun. Although called liver spots, this condition is a skin occurrence that has absolutely nothing to to with the liver. The main cause for liver spots is a gradual and continuous exposure to UV rays, which leads the body to react with overproduction of the main skin pigmentation causing chemical melanin. It may take years for these spots to begin appearing on the skin, and although a long lived condition in the making, removal and reduction of the effects of liver spots, though not immediate, need not take the same amount of time to treat. If you are afflicted with liver spots, there are several treatments that are popular, with the most effective being the four mentioned here:

  1. Protect your skin from the sun. With the use of sunscreen, properly covering clothing, and avoiding sun overexposure is the number one defense against these unsightly blemishes. Be sure to read your sunscreen products, and eye wear to make sure that they effectively protect you against the UVA and UVB rays that promote melanin buildup.
  2. A proper diet – While not always associated with skin care, a proper diet can go a long way in reducing liver spots. Vitamin C and vitamin E rich foods such as citrus fruits and green vegetables are not only great for your skin, but also help to promote general health and higher natural energy levels at almost any stage of life.
  3. Skin creams – Natural skin creams known to help with the reduction of liver spots are found many pharmacies, either over the counter or through the prescription of your health care professional. One natural substance that is often found in these whitening creams is Extrapone Nut Grass. Extrapone Nut Grass has been shown in clinical trial to diminish the signs of liver spots by as much as half. To promote the production of elasticity and collagen in your skin, two naturally occuring substances in the body that help the skin to remain firm, elastic, and young looking all at the same time, often these same skin creams will contain a substance called Cynergy TK. Look for a combination of both of these in order to gain optimum results from the cream you choose.
  4. Use anti-oxidant containing natural supplements. Natural supplements, often containing either green tea or olive leaves are a great source of anti-oxidants that help to reduce the amount of free radicals in the skin that lead to progressive skin damage and lowered protection levels. Make sure that the supplements that you take are composed of all natural ingredients in order to ensure the safety of their use, as well as their proven effectiveness, as most chemical concoctions seem to benefit the marketing department of the source company than they do the health of your skin.

Using these methods on their own or in conjunction with each other often help to not only reduce the signs of liver spots, but also act a a preventative measure against re-occurrence or spread of the condition.
